One of the great joys of being an author is getting to meet people who have read your novels or other authors who are on their own writing journey. Perhaps that’s you?

A question I get asked a lot is “How do I write?” or put another way, “When do I write?”.

Price: World (my first action & adventure novel) was written over a period of 2-3 years, started during the Covid lockdown, under the pretence that as I’d treated myself to a new laptop (my old Macbook of some 15 years finally giving up), I ought to make it pay for itself.

So I started writing down the ideas I’d had in my head since I was at school. An hour here, an hour there, etc.

One of the problems with this approach, I discovered, was I spent so much time reading over the previous sessions writing, I wasn’t getting much actual writing done.

Of course, I’d no sooner finished and self-published Price: World in 2024, than my fans were asking me when was the sequel coming out?

It seems I’d set myself an unexpected (but welcome) challenge, as I’d orignally only planned the one solus novel.

For the 2nd Dr Adam Price Adventure, I decided to ‘shake things up’ with my writing routine. Instead of an hour here & there, I tried to make Sunday’s a writing day, so where-ever possible, I tried to devote as much of 1 day a week as I could, usually only stopping when my bottom got sore from sitting.. my ‘desk’ chair is not very comfy!

Less time wasted reading over previous pages and more coherence in where I was taking the story, as this was a completely new adventure (same heroes – different world threat & villain), and one very much started from scratch with only the characters and the gadgets & settings from Price: World.

Price: Polestarr was completed and self-published in just over a year in April 2025.

Snapped up by readers of the first novel, it quickly became apparent I couldn’t leave the story there.

So I started the 3rd in what was now becoming an action & adventure series of novels, with the same dedicated one day a week devoted to writing where-ever possible.

Now I’d really set myself a challenge with this one. Because much of the action takes place on the Moon, a whole new world of space travel and moon bases was going to have to be invented. Luckily, I’m such a space travel geek that the ideas flowed.

Price: Dark Crater was self-published in April of this year (2026).

With the first novel, I was pretty much able to write the chapter titles first, such as I knew where the story was going. With the next two novels, the chapters came first, with the chapter titles last. I don’t think there’s a right or wrong way here, except to be prepared to change titles or even the order of chapters. Chapter 2 of Price: Polestarr originally started out as Chapter 1!

I’ll write more about my writing process later, including where the inspiration for an Intermission came from and why I write in short chapters.
